RD King / Walter & The Night Owls

R.D. King is a Boston-based composer and acoustic guitar extraordinaire. The winner of the 2017 Canadian Guitar Festival's International Fingerstyle Guitar Competition, King has opened for Andy McKee, Liz Longley, Ari Hest, and many others. His song "Lightness of Being" recently won the Instrumental category at the 2018 Walnut Valley Festival New Song Showcase.

Listening to King’s music is an emotional and introspective journey that is difficult to parse into genre or tradition. King’s audiences describe his music as passionate, powerful, and deeply memorable. A graduate of Ithaca College School of Music, King performs at venues in New England and beyond, including TedX Cambridge, Boston Greenfest, the Spire Center, Walnut Valley Festival, Club Passim, and others. His debut album, vs. Self, was released on April 28, 2017. His second album, self-titled, is set for release in January 2019.

Opening for RD is Acton-based Walter & The Night Owls, an alternative-folk music quartet that has been making waves in the independent Boston music scene. Combining acoustic guitar, violin, and cello with soft vocal harmonies they create a sound all their own. Drawing inspiration from acclaimed songwriters like The Weepies, Paul Simon, and David Gray, the four-piece group is comprised of Walter Rodriguez (vocals/guitar), Masami Rodriguez (violin), Afton Cyrus (vocals), and Kristy Foye (cello). Music from their initial EP has been featured in commercials and films, and has been licensed for use on MTV2 network specials along with other international media outlets. Their debut album, “Living in all Directions,” was released in 2015

The Curious Cocktail Mixology Class

Cambridge-based Curio Spice Co. is popping up at Orange Door Kitchen for a wintertime edition of The Curious Cocktail Mixology Class. As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, we’re teaming up again with the oh-so-talented spicemaster, Claire Cheney, to show you ways to create cocktails that are merry, bright, delicious, and unique.

Spices have been used throughout history to add depth and interest to alcohol, but recently bartenders have started using spices to create "craft cocktails" — libations that delight the senses with hand-made syrups, bitters, and infusions. You can sample such cocktails at a bar, but why not hone your entertaining skills and learn to make them yourself? Join us for a demonstration of three different spice-infused holiday classics (one shaken, one stirred, and one punch) and a deep-dive into how to make bitters at home. Learn how to build layers of flavor and go home with your very own giftable signature bitters blend!

As always, the cocktails will be served with thoughtfully paired snacks to soak up some of that booze.

Tickets are $90 and include heavy appetizers, two cocktails, and a take-home batch of bitters.

Dunham Shoe Factory

Dunham Shoe Factory rarely plays a room this size. Come and enjoy an intimate evening of world music, performed by masters while enjoying Orange Door's great bar and small plates.

DSF is a contemporary acoustic ensemble playing original compositions influenced by world traditions, featuring Anna Patton, Mac Ritchey, Todd Roach, and Dave Haughey. Combining the clarinet, oud, percussion, and cello, their music draws from a myriad of styles including Brazilian, Egyptian, Jazz, Turkish, Classical, and Indian music.

Individual members have performed in a variety of settings locally, nationally, and internationally over the past 25 years — two hold masters degrees in music performance; two have studied traditional Arabic and Turkish music; two have performed with the Paul Winter Consort; and all have spent time improvising in a variety of settings.

The result is a musical experience that is exuberant and soulful. One reviewer wrote, “The multicultural blend of instruments and compositions was fascinating. They are such outstanding musicians and creating the quartet was a joyful decision for us all.”

Tomoko Iwamoto started playing the violin at age six and soon became one of the most advanced students in her Suzuki studio. Later in life, Tomoko performed with groups representing styles from classical, to rock, to pop, to jazz, to world music — demonstrating a great sense of improvisation. She has provided arrangements and performed as a soloist with the Mood Swings Orchestra (jazz big band), and written many arrangements for the Newton All-City Orchestra. Tomoko continues to perform classical violin with the Plymouth Philharmonic, the Lexington Symphony, the New England Philharmonic, and the Woodvale String Quartet, just to name a few.

Mark Chenevert is a clarinet and tenor sax player with richly varied musical experience in alt-rock, jazz, Americana, classical, polka, cabaret, klezmer, second-line, and beyond. He has been a sought after side man in the Boston freelancing scene for years, performing with Willie Alexander, Chandler Travis, Doo-wop DeVille, Josh Lederman, Bertrand Laurence, Zoe Lewis, David Champagne, the Hot Tamale Brass Band, and others. Notable groups with which he performed in the past include Limbo Race, the Del Fuegos, and Hypnotic Clambake. Mark can be heard on dozens of recordings by these and other artists.

Sven Larson is a Boston-based acoustic bass and electric bass. Born in Ohio, Sven came to Boston in 1995 and began studying with bass virtuoso Steve Neil. Sven continued to learn, perform, and record in many genres, while becoming a popular performer on the local jazz and blues scene. He has played on many stages across the US, Canada, and Europe including Boston’s Symphony Hall, the Tanglewood Jazz Festival, and the King Biscuit Festival, to name just a few. He has performed with Toni Lynn Washington, Charles Neville, Michelle Willson, Roses Pawn Shop, Albert Cummings, Nicole Nelson, and others.

Jack Soref is a guitarist who specializes in playing and teaching music in the style of Django Reinhardt. Jack has performed throughout the US as well as France, Canada, and Scotland. He began studying the guitar as a teen with Madison-based Jazz Mandolinist and guitarist Sims Delaney-Pothoff. In 2003, Jack moved to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music. Kemp Harris

Kemp Harris is a composer, musician, children’s author, actor, and teacher. Born in North Carolina, Kemp taught himself piano and was writing songs at age 14.

This summer his band was the featured act at Beat Brasserie in Harvard Square, sponsored by AirBNB. It was a captivating, soulful display of what Kemp does best — completely engage his audience from his first note to the last.

As a musician and composer, Kemp has shared the stage with Taj Mahal, Gil Scott-Heron, and blues artist, Koko Taylor. He wrote and performed “If Loneliness Was Black” for The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Complexions. He has also composed for Phase One Contemporary Dance in Atlanta.

Kemp’s CD, “Sometimes In Bad Weather,” has been called a "thoughtful tapestry exploring the intersection of American roots music, jazz, and African folk influences." Kemp’s second CD, “Edenton,” is a blues inspired journey, featuring the Holmes Brothers providing additional vocals.

Kemp also composed the ending credits soundtrack for “An Unreasonable Man,” a documentary about the life and career of Ralph Nader. The song “Stand Up, Rise Up” is the theme for Ralph Nader’s weekly talk show.
