Okazu Dinner with Aya Hashimoto

We invite you to join Japanese chef and West Acton resident, Aya Hashimoto, for an intimate Okazu style dinner at Orange Door Kitchen. Unlike an elaborate Japanese restaurant style dinner, okazu refers to dishes that are casually cooked and shared around the family table. Translated from Japanese, okazu means “side dish,” because these well seasoned (read: delicious) dishes are eaten in between bites of cooked rice. Catch up with friends next to our cheery fire and then tuck into an authentic Japanese feast prepared with chef Hashimoto’s passion for telling the story of her cultural roots through food.

ABOUT THE CHEF Aya Hashimoto, born and raised in Japan, has been a resident of West Acton for 5 years. Drawn to researching and writing about food and the food industry, she attended school in New York with the goal of becoming a food critic. Despite that goal, Hashimoto soon discovered that she loved cooking more than commenting on someone else’s food and decided to pursue a career as a chef. Over the years, she has worked at Debra’s Natural Gourmet (Concord, MA), Craigie on Main (Cambridge, MA), and 80 Thoreau (Concord, MA). She currently works as a cook for a health care company and as a personal chef for a Japanese family. When Aya has free time, she enjoys practicing yoga, exploring restaurants, cooking at home, and taking care of her two dachshunds.

Paper Bones is alive and kicking. While this album is a mere drop in the ocean, making it helped me find solace and stay grounded during these strange, tragic, scary, beautiful times we find ourselves in.

Now, it's time to share the songs live. Those who know me know that I don't play out much, so I'm working hard to make this a special event. I've partnered with my dear friends Chris and Meredith at the Orange Door Kitchen in Acton to host the show, and I'm pulling together a band of ace musicians to give these songs a special life.

The show starts at 4:45 pm with two 45-minute sets, broken up by a spacious intermission, with time to connect with each other and enjoy the beautiful space. Tasty, filling nibbles and non-alcoholic drinks are included in the ticket price, and there will also be a cash bar (bar accepts credit cards only). The album will be available for purchase at the show.

Huge thanks to John Nolan of Middle Mountain Studios who produced the record. These songs wouldn't be real without his creativity and persistence. During the making of this album, both our families went through a lot. Children were born. Loved ones were lost. New ventures were started. Homes were moved into. We left jobs and jobs left us. And three separate recording studios emerged from the ground up in unused rooms across the city.

And extra special thanks to my wife, Erica for believing in these songs and in the importance of music in our family's life. Her singing on this record helped make the music shine. I love you, babe :)

All of that is in this music, and I can't wait to play it live. Hope to see you there!

Hello, Janet here! I grew up as a picky eater and learned how to cook partly to control what ended up on the table. Fortunately, my tastes have expanded to include many international ingredients and dishes, many styles and cultures. I regularly host dinner parties for friends and family, bake (scones, muffins, coffeecakes, cookies) for my grateful colleagues at work, do some private catering, am a Cook’s Illustrated recipe tester, and I have a ridiculous collection of cookbooks. Hone your knives and your skills with this special knife workshop at Orange Door Kitchen! Join edge-guru Nick Sozio for a lesson on the components of your most trusted kitchen tool and the physics of sharpening, along with guided hands-on instruction on how to use a water stone to sharpen your dulling kitchen knives and get the best life out of your investment. Then work with your sharpened blades and award-winning chef and culinary instructor, Michael Leviton to learn knife skills 101. Practice the fundamental cuts - mince, dice, brunoise, bâtonnet and julienne - and pick up some advanced techniques as you prepare ingredients to take home with one of chef Leviton’s recipes. Lunch between the sessions and post-class cocktails and snacks will be provided by Orange Door Kitchen.

RD King / Walter & The Night Owls

R.D. King is a Boston-based composer and acoustic guitar extraordinaire. The winner of the 2017 Canadian Guitar Festival's International Fingerstyle Guitar Competition, King has opened for Andy McKee, Liz Longley, Ari Hest, and many others. His song "Lightness of Being" recently won the Instrumental category at the 2018 Walnut Valley Festival New Song Showcase.

Listening to King’s music is an emotional and introspective journey that is difficult to parse into genre or tradition. King’s audiences describe his music as passionate, powerful, and deeply memorable. A graduate of Ithaca College School of Music, King performs at venues in New England and beyond, including TedX Cambridge, Boston Greenfest, the Spire Center, Walnut Valley Festival, Club Passim, and others. His debut album, vs. Self, was released on April 28, 2017. His second album, self-titled, is set for release in January 2019.

Opening for RD is Acton-based Walter & The Night Owls, an alternative-folk music quartet that has been making waves in the independent Boston music scene. Combining acoustic guitar, violin, and cello with soft vocal harmonies they create a sound all their own. Drawing inspiration from acclaimed songwriters like The Weepies, Paul Simon, and David Gray, the four-piece group is comprised of Walter Rodriguez (vocals/guitar), Masami Rodriguez (violin), Afton Cyrus (vocals), and Kristy Foye (cello). Music from their initial EP has been featured in commercials and films, and has been licensed for use on MTV2 network specials along with other international media outlets. Their debut album, “Living in all Directions,” was released in 2015

The Curious Cocktail Mixology Class

Cambridge-based Curio Spice Co. is popping up at Orange Door Kitchen for a wintertime edition of The Curious Cocktail Mixology Class. As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, we’re teaming up again with the oh-so-talented spicemaster, Claire Cheney, to show you ways to create cocktails that are merry, bright, delicious, and unique.

Spices have been used throughout history to add depth and interest to alcohol, but recently bartenders have started using spices to create "craft cocktails" — libations that delight the senses with hand-made syrups, bitters, and infusions. You can sample such cocktails at a bar, but why not hone your entertaining skills and learn to make them yourself? Join us for a demonstration of three different spice-infused holiday classics (one shaken, one stirred, and one punch) and a deep-dive into how to make bitters at home. Learn how to build layers of flavor and go home with your very own giftable signature bitters blend!

As always, the cocktails will be served with thoughtfully paired snacks to soak up some of that booze.
